THE UNRAVELED ACADEMY 2019 RETREAT

In a field where we are expected to capture connections, why is it that we so often feel disconnected? When our life’s work is to create art that empowers and inspires and magnifies emotions, it is easy to become drained. Left alone. Weak. Naked. Bareboned and tangled up. We wonder, do we have anything left? Have we given everything to our art? Where do we go from here? Are we even here?

Unraveled Academy is all about community. This is why we have created a retreat where we will refuel, refocus and repurpose ourselves as creatives. From the moment you step into the beautiful Welton Woods cabin in Fairview, Utah, we want it to become your safe harbor. Here, you are able to be as weird as you wish and as free as you’ve ever been.

What, Where, WHy.

The Experience

We will spend our mornings meditating and finding peace within our yoga practice, led by Rebecca Lane, a certified yoga nidra instructor + reiki practitioner; while our team ensures that we are fueling our bodies with lovingly grown and locally harvested produce and specialty teas and coffee. From there, we will dive into our days of learning from incredibly talented instructors and investing time not only into our craft, but equally important into ourselves.

At night, we will sit beneath string lights and breath in the mountain air and feast, while drinking wine, sharing stories, and finding our balance. We will likely laugh too loud, and cry too hard all the while making friendships that will last longer than the memories. Let’s use the Unraveled retreat as a cleanse. Let’s join together in this new wave of education, as we hone in on our minds, bodies and souls. Wherever we are on our creative journeys, let this will be our rebirth. This is our chance. Let’s do it together.

The Investment

$1,800 + tax. This includes transportation to and from the airport, all meals, wine, lodging, learning, yoga, meditation, styled shoots by our talented instructors, and most important, togetherness. Welton Woods is an expansive lodge designed to bring luxury amenities into the great outdoors. It’s the perfect place for connecting with yourself and others. The Lodge is situated on a rustic mountainside above the town of Fairview in Utah. This place really is such a find. Welton Woods has more than 10,000 square feet of living space, and we are so thrilled to have nabbed it for this retreat.

The property offers the unique opportunity to accommodate a significant number of people all under one roof in the same locale. It's close enough to town to get things you need, but isolated enough to offer the ease of seclusion. The cabin features trundle bunks so although no one will have to share beds the unraveled participants will be sharing space to promote connection and togetherness.  The cabin has a theatre room, game room, hot tub and sauna, huge wrap around porch that overlooks the forest and mountains, and last but not least eight (yes, 8!) bathrooms. The photos of the property honestly, don't nearly do the place justice. It has this amazing quality to it that makes it feel cozy despite its enormous size.

AND IT'S ALL FOR A GOOD CAUSE

All proceeds from the retreat will be going to our Unraveled Scholarship Foundation. This scholarship has been set up to fund a fresh start for a woman in need of financial assistance and creative healing. We will help this woman  build a successful photography business by purchasing her everything she needs to do so (computer, camera, internet, etc). We also have 25 seasoned photography mentors, ready to volunteer their time to walk hand-in-hand with her through this process. The recipient will be a women who has experienced trauma and hardship and is deserving of a second chance. Unraveled Academy is not only a home to artists from every walk of life, but now has the opportunity to spread the love even further, and for that we have never been more proud.

The Instructors

Lindsay Saunders I’m Lindsay Saunders, the lady behind Forest + Field Photography. I live in the giant and wild state of Alaska with my three kids and husband. My other grown up job is teaching as a middle/high school history and art teacher.  I love to garden, explore, and make art with all sorts of mediums. I actually started photography through the avenues of painting and drawing. I love to meld my obsession with classical and modern art into the photographs I take. I am greatly inspired by the towering nature surrounding me, authors, filmmakers, and street photographers. There are too many individuals to name.  I am always searching out inspiration in paintings I see, stories I read, or even the flickering of light on a fence. Inspiration is literally, all around us.  In my work I adore documenting families, children, couples, and nature. However, candid documentary photography is my favorite genre of all time and will always steal the show in my opinion. Currently my favorite photographers are Martin Parr and Raymond Depardon. I have been featured in Dear Photographer, Click Magazine, LooksLikeFilm, and have been published by National Geographic. I love working with the group at Unraveled and this community means so much to me and has helped me flourish as an artist immensely. I can't wait to grow along with you!

Ace Fanning I am Ace Fanning-- it was a name given to me in hopes I would one day be a household name as one of the worlds most talented athletes. Instead, it was the name engraved each year for, "Most Improved Player," which is the award they give to the kid who cried less at the end of the season than they did at the beginning. I never wanted to be remembered for my ability to throw a ball or run a certain speed-- I hope to one day be remembered for my ability to make others laugh. I've been doing photography for 8 years now-- and when I say that, I mean 8 years ago was the first time I picked up anything other than a phone or point-and-shoot to do anything other than take stupid pictures of myself. Over the course of that 8 years-- I have found not only my people, but I have found myself. I spent the first 20 years of my life completely unsure of who I was and why I was even here... through photography, I have found my purpose and I have never been more sure of the person I was meant to be-- and it's not a sports superstar. I use my photography to try and show others who it is I see when I look at them, and unlike most photographers, I am not as interested in the "moment" as I am in the way I make my subject feel. I've never met a person who couldn't use a boost, whether it be in physical appearance, or someone who can't remember the last time they laughed, or a family going through a tough time-- I have an opportunity to be a light and fuck, that is one of the best feelings in the world.

Jessica Rasmusson I'm Jessica Rasmussen, the face behind Jessica Max. I live in Michigan with my kids and my husband. I am a lover of adventure by heart, an extroverted introvert, and I'm married to a truly wild and crazy man who really helps to balance me out. I grew up painting and drawing, loving watercolors and pastels. I found photography though architecture school, during a project where we had to photograph buildings. I completed my project with a disposable camera and photographed my buildings during a rainy day and the day I picked up that film was amazing. I officially started my photography journey years later when my husband and I got married, and he put a camera in my hand to photograph his snowmobile events, and shortly thereafter I turned the camera on our children and family. I am inspired by music, books I read, movies I watch, the way my children play, and the connection between people. Using my photographs as a way to communicate feelings is therapeutic for me. Photographing families and motherhood is where I feel my strongest love in my client work. My heart lies in photographing my children, where it all started for my work, and my self portraits.
